Welcome to NHA STUDBOOK - Maintaining the integrity of the sport of Horseracing

The first South African Thoroughbred Stud Book was printed by The Jockey Club in 1904, which contained the records of the produce of known Thoroughbred mares going back as far as 1886. Since then, 29 volumes of the book have been published.

The function of the Department, is however, not limited to the production of the Stud Book. In line with the role of The National Horseracing Authority, the Stud Book Department manages and regulates all processes relating to the incorporation of horses into the Thoroughbred population in South Africa. This includes:

  • The registration of Breeders, Stallions and Mares;
  • The recording of covering of mares;
  • The recording of the results of all coverings;
  • The registration of foals;
  • The microchipping of all foals;
  • The production of a passport for all horses;
  • The registration of all imported horses;
  • The issuing of export certificates for all exported horses;
  • The production of various publications relating to the breeding of Thoroughbred horses, including the Stud Book;
  • The maintenance of statistics relating to the breeding industry;
  • The imposition of penalties and disciplinary measures on persons who do not abide by the Rules which have been established to protect the integrity of The Stud Book.
  •

    The responsibility of maintaining and protecting the integrity of The Stud Book is one which The National Horseracing Authority takes very seriously. Participants in the Racing Industry can rest assured that all possible measures are taken to ensure that the Thoroughbred produce breed in South Africa and Zimbabwe is of unquestionable integrity.
